Alexander T. Mitchel, Esq.
Alex focuses his practice on real property tax assessment matters and appeals the tax assessments of all types of commercial real estate assets – including office, multifamily, retail, hospitality, industrial, and land/development sites – in the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia.
Alex began working in real property tax in 2014 and has devoted his career to this field of practice ever since. Over the course of his career, he has handled thousands of appeals including administrative appeals and hearings in all of the local jurisdictions as well as litigation in D.C. Superior Court, Maryland Tax Court, and many Circuit Courts across Virginia.
Alex’s clientele include many of the largest owners, operators, and managers of commercial real estate in the region and in the country. Alex also serves as local litigation counsel to several of the top tax consulting firms in the country.
Prior to founding Mitchel Law, Alex worked at other leading property tax firms in the region and he leverages that unique experience and perspective – having gained exposure to a wide range of styles and strategies – into a thoughtfully honed approach that incorporates the best practices in this specialized field and presents a distinct value proposition for his clients.
Alex regularly assists, on a pro bono basis, qualified nonprofit and tax-exempt organizations with obtaining and maintaining real estate tax exemptions, and encourages any such organizations to contact him for pro bono legal support.
Alex received his Bachelor of Arts degree from McGill University and his Juris Doctor degree, cum laude, from the University of Maryland Carey School of Law, where he served as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Race, Religion, Gender & Class and was a recipient of the Dean’s Award.
Alex is licensed to practice law in the District of Columbia, Maryland, and the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Alex is a member of the D.C. Building Industry Association (“DCBIA”) and the DCBIA Agency Working Group for the D.C. Office of the Chief Financial Officer, as well as the Rules Committee for the Tax Division of D.C. Superior Court.
